Flemish Family Residence
Our Home
Family home with spacious garden and comfortable, recently renovated interior, providing a perfect base for exploring the heart of Flanders, Belgium and Europe.
Easy connections to all major Belgian destinations.
Cultural cities such as Brussels (one hour), Antwerp (one hour), Gent (one and a half hours) and Brugge (two hours) provide opportunities for perfect day-outings, by car or train.
Over the border, Maastricht (twenty minutes) or Aachen (forty-five minutes) or Köln (one and a half hours), Paris (four hours) and Amsterdam (three hours) give you that extra international feeling.
You will also have the opportunity to visit several World War II memorials nearby.
Our home has three bedrooms that will easily sleep five people, and the attic is converted into a spacious loft, serving as a fourth bedroom.
Downstairs you can relax in the lounge and sitting room with a well equipped internet corner, so you won't have to miss out on what's going on at home.
The kitchen is up to date, with a large cooker and a fridge, and at the back of the house there's access to the garden, which has a covered terrace and a large garden shed.
The garden is situated on the south side of the house.
A great feature is the regional bike path network which almost passes by the house (five bicycles are available!), and that will take you to see all the great nature and recreation facilities this area has to offer.
Our Neighbourhood
The house is in a residential suburb that was designed for a coal mining community.
Today, beautiful architecture and an attractive mix of multi-cultural life are left.
Shops and market and cinema are only a street away, and the bus stop is around the corner.
Five minutes from the town centre of Genk and the station, with connections to all major Belgian destinations.
The neighbours are friendly, and will be happy to help you out and make you feel at home.
We do have an outdoor cat that is very friendly and causes no trouble at all; it just sits beside the house all day waiting for some attention, and it sleeps outside.
About Us
We both work in education (higher education and high school) and have been travelling in Europe for many years.
We lived in the UK and France for a while, and speak Dutch, English and French fluently.
Our children love to experience other cultures and meet new people, and we are now hoping to explore North America for the first time.
Our sixteen-year-old son Lieven dreams of living in Montreal as an exchange student in two years' time, so ideally we would love to explore the Montreal area in the summer of 2012 - and we wonder if there is anyone who might be able to find us a nice place to stay?
For exchanges outside Europe, we are willing to swap cars - we drive a Volvo V50 Estate car.
