Sydney
Local passions: Surfing

How many cities have surfing beaches attached? Not many, that’s how many. But Sydney without the beach would be like Paris without the Champs-Elysées. Even hard at work, Sydneysiders are just 20 minutes from a dip in the ocean.
These days, surfing isn’t just a niche activity for young men with long hair. It’s a year-round sport for men and women of all ages. In fact, the beaches are fantastic in winter, when the offshore wind helps curl those perfect waves.
Riding the waves for the first time, says one of our surfing buddies, makes many people wonder what they’ve been doing for the last 40 years. Once you feel the swell of the wave, the salt spray on the wind, nothing else seems to matter very much.
